Free and open to the public

Autumn is an ideal time to plant trees. Let an expert introduce you to a variety of superior trees for smaller gardens. Follow his tips for planting and for follow up care.

Dan Moeller, as curator for Hoyt Arboretum, oversees 185 acres and 8000 botanical and horticultural collections. He also acts as a consultant for both the Arboretum and Portland Parks and Recreation. Collaborating with other botanic gardens and arboreta worldwide, Dan has been instrumental in building a world-class collection of plants with educational, research, and horticultural value. An engaging speaker and media figure, Dan teaches a wide-range of audiences about plant maintenance, design, conservation, and diversity. Previous to his years at Hoyt Arboretum, Dan managed the 18 display gardens and 3 conservatories of the Chicago Botanic Garden. His many responsibilities included the supervision and education of "at risk" teens through the College First Program and the development of horticultural courses for the public. Dan graduated from the University of Colorado with a B.A. in Environmental, Population and Organismic Biology and from Portland State University with an M.A. in Public Administration with a specialization in Nonprofit Management and Natural Resource Policy.

Forest Park Day of Stewardship: Saturday, September 20th

This past March, we formally launched the Forest Park Conservancy with a community-wide volunteer stewardship event. On a cool and misty spring morning, over 165 volunteers turned out to remove non-native invasive species and plant a variety of native trees and shrubs at three sites in Forest Park. Saturday, September 20th, we honor the 60th anniversary of Forest Park's dedication with our second Day of Stewardship of 2008.  This time around, the focus will be on basic trail projects and installing a section of split rail fence along Balch Creek.  We will also be removing English Ivy and Himalayan blackberry to help prepare these sites for eventual planting and ongoing restoration work.

REI, Keen and Columbia Sportswear will be hosting sites, and we will have an assortment of great products on hand from Food Front Co-Op, Grand Central Bakery, Clif Bar and Stumptown Coffee.  A volunteer appreciation party will follow the event, and we will be raffling a number of items off, including Keen shoes, Forest Park map sets and passes to the Columbia Sportswear employee store.

To register for this event, or for more information, please visit our website. If you are interested in sponsoring the event or bringing out a group of volunteers, or have other inquiries, please contact us.

We hope you will be able to join us for this exciting new tradition of stewardship in Forest Park!

Volunteer Work Party: Saturday, August 16th

Our next volunteer event is scheduled for this Saturday, August 16th from 9 am to 1 pm. We will be working on the Ridge Trail, which we built several years back. The Ridge Trail climbs from the St. Johns Bridge all the way up to Springville Road. We will be parking and meeting at the Springville Road trailhead off of NW Skyline. (Map for driving directions)

Food Front Co-Op, Grand Central Baking and Clif Bar are providing a variety of goodies and we will have Stumptown Coffee on hand. We will also be raffling off a free pair of KEEN shoes, along with Forest Park map sets and passes to the Columbia Sportswear employee store.

No experience necessary. Please wear long pants and sturdy footwear. We recommend packing raingear, regardless of the forecast. Also, please bring work gloves and a full water bottle.

Long underappreciated as a travel destination for passionate gardeners, the Low Countries and the lower Rhine region of Germany offer a fascinating array of garden diversions - and not just at tulip time! Freed from the French and English landscape design movements that dominated the region for hundreds of years, gardeners, designers, and nursery people are now at the cutting edge in developing and introducing new ideas, designs, and plant material. See the itinerary page for dates and gardens. Download tour flyer for complete details and registration form. Contact the office for more information.
