Arbor Day in the Arboretum and Washington Park


Monday, April 7, 2008 

Arbor Day Ceremony in the Hoyt Arboretum Magnolia Collection

The City of Portland held its annual Arbor Day ceremony at Hoyt Arboretum where Hoyt's world-class collection of Magnolias was featured on Monday, April 7, 2008.  Three new magnolia trees were added to the collection.

 Hoyt Arboretum Friends and others of Oregon's tree-loving and environmental stewardship organizations presented tree and earth-friendly activities & information

Children were admitted free on Saturday thanks to a grant from East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District.

Bamboo in Winter
Bamboo Festival

The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the American Bamboo Society and the Hoyt Arboretum sponsored a Bamboo Festival on Saturday, July 26, 2008 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. This free event was open to the public and was held at the Hoyt Arboretum, 4000 SW Fairview Blvd., Portland.   Plant and merchandise sales as well as demonstrations of bamboo uses occurred throughout the day in the Stevens Pavilion Picnic Shelter (across the street from the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center).    It was a great opportunity to learn about bamboo and the ways it can be used as a sustainable building material.

Hoyt Arboretum sessions in 2008
June 23 - 27; July 21 - 25; Aug. 11 - 15.         

A  first-hand experience with nature through hiking, scientific observation, forest crafts and story-telling was offered through  Portland Parks and Recreation’s Environmental Education department for students ages 5 to 13. 


Benefit Flower Sale at New Seasons Markets
Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17, 2008

Location: Portland Area New Seasons Markets

Volunteers from Hoyt Arboretum Friends Foundation, in collaboration with Leach Botanical Garden and Berry Botanic Garden participated in a benefit flower sale at Portland New Seasons Markets in August 2008.  The sale was quite successful and funds received directly benifited these three urban gardens of Portland.  Thank you New Seasons Markets for your support of community botanical gardens! 


Hoyt Arboretum at OHSU Farmers Market
August 19, 2008

Hoyt Arboretum participated in the August 19th OHSU Farmer's Market.  The OHSU (Oregon Health and Science University) Farmer's Markets take place on Tuesdays between the end of May until the 1st week in October. The focus of the market is to reinforce an increased understanding held by university and hospital staff members of the importance of the greater picture of health that includes care for the environment.
