Oregon is renowned for our trees. The Pacific Northwest broadly is known for our majestic firs, massive western redcedars, and towering pines. Yet, we would be remiss if we forgot about our grand and incredible broadleaf trees. Oaks, maples, hawthorns, alders, dogwoods, and plenty more broadleaf species grace our lovely forests and fill important niches in the ecosystem. Not only that, but in order to compete with all those conifers, our broadleaf trees have earned some superlatives of their very own. This course will be a survey of the most common broadleaf trees native to Oregon including how to identify them and their natural habitat and special characteristics. This class will be one hour inside presentation and two hour hike practicing ID on the trail.
