Have you ever taken a hike during the wintertime and wondered about those bare branches and twigs? What plants are they? What if there are no flowers, fruits or even leaves? Join us for an initial classroom session that will show the characteristic twig features to look at and clues to look for, in order to distinguish and identify several of the common native woody plants in the wintertime Pacific Northwest and in the Arboretum, then for a walk outside to investigate those featured twigs. Be prepared for the weather with good walking shoes, raingear, etc.
About the instructor: Dr. Mandy Tu is the Plant Taxonomist & Herbarium Curator at the Hoyt Arboretum. In this position, she is responsible for collecting voucher specimens and verifying the identity of the trees within the arboretum and is often asked to identify plants by natural area managers in the Portland region. She has a B.S. in Botany from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California at Davis. Mandy has taught many plant identification courses and workshops for botanical professionals and plant enthusiasts.
Class size is limited to 15 participants; registration is required. $15/member, $20/non-member. Recommended for ages 15 and up. There are no refunds for cancellations within two weeks of the class date.
